Mérida was founded as Augusta Emerita in 25 BC, the capital of the ancient Roman province of Lusitania. Located almost half-way between Madrid and Lisbon, it is nowadays an important historic centre, and the capital of the Spanish region of Extremadura. The ‘Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida’ has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The city was founded in order to protect the Guadiana River pass, becoming the largest city on the Iberian Peninsula. Visigoths, Moors, the Christian ‘reconquista’, and the Napoleonic invasion left their mark too, and the city is nowadays home to the most complete Roman remains in Spain.
Its historic centre displays a mix of all these cultures, with the Roman Theatre and the Roman Bridge standing out. The Alcazaba is the old fortress of Roman origin, successively rebuilt by Visigoths and Moors. Renaissance, Gothic and Baroque buildings, as well as typical cobbled streets complete the picture. Some of the most charming hotels and B&Bs in Mérida are located in the Old Town.
The easiest way to get to the city is flying in to Seville or Madrid, and then by train to the local railway station. Whether you’re searching the best hotels or budget accommodation, don’t miss the Mérida deals available on Booking.com!

Merida has so many great archeological and cultural sites to explore. Thanfully they are all packed within walkable distances.
A day would not be enough unless you have the stamina. But it can be done.

Loved the Roman Theatre and the Amphitheatre.
Loved the Roman Theatre and the Amphitheatre. We also went on a trolley ride through the town which was fun and gave us a good view of the Roman Bridge and Aqueduct. Our hotel was not far from the Temple of Diana which was passed on the way to a really lively town square. Generally the atmosphere in Mérida was lively and fun. Loved it.

I'm a big fan of Roman history, and Mérida was the obvious place to stop over on my trip down to Andalucia from the UK. Temple of Diana and the aqueduct are both stunning, but sadly the amphitheatre wasn't open to visitors when I was there. A good excuse to return!

I loved the area near the Roman sites.
I loved the area near the Roman sites. The restaurants and shops were wonderful, and the area we stayed in near them seemed very safe. We spent about 3.5 hours at the Roman sites and history museum, but we could have used another 3 hours to explore the site in order to read the informational plaques at a leisurely pace and to people watch. We ate at La Casona, and the food was amazing, especially for the very reasonable prices. The portions are BIG, by the way. Don't miss out on trying the grilled goat cheese salad.

Merida is “advanced” Spain, not that many foreigners get there, to the region of Extremadura. But it repays the effort for those that want to see vast amounts of Roman remains, in various states of repair. Everyone will want to see the aquaduct, Trajan’s Arch and the museum. But there is much more dotted all over the place.
Easy to get around from a central location, most sites within walking range. Plenty of decent eateries if you think Spanish. Tourist food if you must.
Careful what time of year you go, the climate is extreme.
I should have said whilst there but I didn’t want to spoil our stay. We have used Booking.com extensively and have been happy with your business model. However, the Merida wasn’t clean, the bathroom was disgusting with urine stains around the toilet, the floor hadn’t been swept and my wife found hair around her bed. The standard was poor, there was no service at all.
It was more expensive than the Parador in Salamanca where we are staying tonight and I wish I had booked two nights here rather than stopping at Merida.
The staff was absolutely great: friendly and helpful.
Breakfast and food in restaurant good and affordable. The staff in restaurant was very helpful.
The pool was not working unfortunately despite +30 C outside, but it was written in hotel’s information before we booked it so we can not complain.
Beds are huge and comfortable.
As for location we had a car, so we quite enjoyed the location of hotel near motorway. it was quick and comfortable to travel to Badajos and Sevilla.
The hotel is really close to the station and Santa Eulalia Basilica, which is one of the main attractions. The staff was generally helpful and sympathetic, they tried to accommodate every need. There was a nice smell in the lobby and in the room when we entered, everything was quite clean. Air conditioning was working properly, there were a safe deposit and a balcony. Water was really good, it was warm and with good pressure. The room's design was really beautiful.
Very cool concept hotel, based on movie themes on each floor and each room, based on directors. It was remodeled and renamed back in October of 2022 and it was pretty well done. Room size was very good and it had a huge TV. The location was also really good, it was about 10 mins from the main sites for Merida. Parking was close by and was $11 a day, just ask the front desk for the voucher. We were in an end room overlooking the plaza and it was a great value.
The place is amazing! Clean, remarkably well-equipped, with an incredibly generous breakfast supplied for both of our mornings there.
It is also perfectly located in the city. Within easy walking distance to the many historic sites in the old city including the Roman theater and amphitheater which are just steps away. We will heartily recommend to anyone we know traveling to Mérida and would definitely stay there again in our travels take us back.
The reception staff, especially Isabel, were extraordinarily kind and helpful. The breakfast room staff welcomed us at the very last minute after we overslept. The public spaces are generous and comfy, and the bar was a nice refuge. The location gives easy access both to the historic sites and to the pleasant, real-life city and its pedestrian streets and shops. Merida is good for tourists, but they don't own the place.
This is the best apartment we have stayed at in Spain, and we have done much travelling in Spain. The apartment is modern, new, and has all the amenities expected. It was fully equipped with utensils and kitchenware for those who prefer to prepare food in. Awesome! The location is excellent, well within walking distance of the center and the Roman ruins. Parking is not far and easily accessible.
Easy to get to by car, with free on site parking, and only 10 to 15 minute walk to the centre of town. Nearby supermarkets for provisions, and bars and restaurants for those who want to eat out. A great base from which to explore Merida on foot, or to go further a field by car. Definitely one of the best, if not the best, value for money hotels in Merida, but without compromising on quality.
This "hostal" was more like a 3 star hotel. It exceeded all my expectations and then some. The location was right in the middle of everything in Merida so you didnt need to walk far to see all the ruins. The staff were more than helpful and so friendly and nice. The room was great as was the bathroom and everything was clean. I would DEFINITELY recommend this accommodation to anyone.
Located in the center of Merida, this hotel provides nice rooms with private jacuzi. The breakfast served in the room was delicous and copious. We had a room with a nice balcony and there is a parking lot not far from the hotel (10 min. by walk).
The location was wonderful - next to the old Roman Bridge. The apartment space was very convenient for walking around Merida. We loved that we were above Rex Numitor restaurant. We ate there twice and had fabulous meals with a 20% discount.
This hotel was the best overnight stop we have had on this holiday. It was well maintained, clean and comfortable. It offers garage parking which is essential when you are carrying visible luggage. It was also the cheapest 1 night stop.
quiet and located easily from main roads down to Cadiz. good value for a 1 night stopover and owner sent clear directions for parking etc Merida has amazing Roman ruins, ended up staying longer than anticipated .
The hotel was very clean. The beds were a bit hard and we could have used more pillows. The pool was was clean and the water perfect!Good breakfast and helpful staff.
Great hotel in excellent location. Very well appointed room overlooking the main square. Merida is a lovely place to visit with historic attractions and great food.
