Mérida was founded as Augusta Emerita in 25 BC, the capital of the ancient Roman province of Lusitania. Located almost half-way between Madrid and Lisbon, it is nowadays an important historic centre, and the capital of the Spanish region of Extremadura. The ‘Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida’ has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The city was founded in order to protect the Guadiana River pass, becoming the largest city on the Iberian Peninsula. Visigoths, Moors, the Christian ‘reconquista’, and the Napoleonic invasion left their mark too, and the city is nowadays home to the most complete Roman remains in Spain.
Its historic centre displays a mix of all these cultures, with the Roman Theatre and the Roman Bridge standing out. The Alcazaba is the old fortress of Roman origin, successively rebuilt by Visigoths and Moors. Renaissance, Gothic and Baroque buildings, as well as typical cobbled streets complete the picture. Some of the most charming hotels and B&Bs in Mérida are located in the Old Town.
The easiest way to get to the city is flying in to Seville or Madrid, and then by train to the local railway station. Whether you’re searching the best hotels or budget accommodation, don’t miss the Mérida deals available on Booking.com!
Loved the Roman Theatre and the Amphitheatre. We also went on a trolley ride through the town which was fun and gave us a good view of the Roman Bridge and Aqueduct. Our hotel was not far from the Temple of Diana which was passed on the way to a really lively town square. Generally the atmosphere in Mérida was lively and fun. Loved it.

I'm a big fan of Roman history, and Mérida was the obvious place to stop over on my trip down to Andalucia from the UK. Temple of Diana and the aqueduct are both stunning, but sadly the amphitheatre wasn't open to visitors when I was there. A good excuse to return!

I loved the area near the Roman sites.
I loved the area near the Roman sites. The restaurants and shops were wonderful, and the area we stayed in near them seemed very safe. We spent about 3.5 hours at the Roman sites and history museum, but we could have used another 3 hours to explore the site in order to read the informational plaques at a leisurely pace and to people watch. We ate at La Casona, and the food was amazing, especially for the very reasonable prices. The portions are BIG, by the way. Don't miss out on trying the grilled goat cheese salad.

Merida is “advanced” Spain, not that many foreigners get there, to the region of Extremadura. But it repays the effort for those that want to see vast amounts of Roman remains, in various states of repair. Everyone will want to see the aquaduct, Trajan’s Arch and the museum. But there is much more dotted all over the place.
Easy to get around from a central location, most sites within walking range. Plenty of decent eateries if you think Spanish. Tourist food if you must.
Careful what time of year you go, the climate is extreme.

this unit was a 11 out of 10. Clean, very clean.
this unit was a 11 out of 10. Clean, very clean. Close to dining, and all the Roman sites (walking distance). Bed was very comfortable and I got the two extra pillows I requested. No charge. Good parking garage, easy access with keyless entry. System was super easy compared to the eight other Booking.com sites we have stayed at on this trip.
Perfecto. Everything is great. Professional service. Although the hotel and reception are not in the same building, it was an opportunity to pass through the colorful streets of Merida. Very nice staff worked at the hotel. We arrived earlier and everything was cleaned earlier for us. Everything is clean and comfortable. We also found coffee and water. Very pleased. Merida is great, there is a lot to see and we did it on foot. The hotel is right next to the Temple of Diana. Looks great day and night. We are satisfied and recommend staying here.
10+++/A+++ Apartment directly in the middle of town near all the sites and Roman sites. Full apartment, well stocked. Nice balcony and clean apartment (Budapest Apt). New and very clean. Great A/C unit and very hot water. Great WiFi, and elevator. Great kitchenette area. Nice size queen bed in quiet location. Check-in guy at the hotel was great since there is no check-in at the actual property itself. Great communication on how to obtain the keys. Parking was in a very secure public parking garage.
Everything ! Location, facilities and staff. Location is top ! The apartment is also top ! It is big, clean and comfortable. It has everything we need. On top of that, Noelia, the staff there, went beyond our expectations to accommodate our needs. She allowed for a late checkout which really helped us. All in all this apartment made us feel like home. It's the best accomodation we had during our 4 weeks trip in Spain and Portugal. Thank you !
The apartment was exceptional. High ceilings, very spacious rooms, everything you need in the kitchen. We were extremely satisfied with the level of cleanliness, as well as with the location. The hotel is located just a few steps away from Merida's main tourist attractions, but we were enjoying uninterrupted sleep on very comfortable bed (Good quality of bedding should also be noted).
the location of the apartment was excellent for getting to the main sites we were interested in visiting. The person who met us Santos was very informative about the apartment and the visitor attractions in Merida. The apartment was comfortable and well equipped. Santos was on hand to help when needed and was very attentive to our requirements.
Well located hotel renovated completely in 2022 with fun theme. Great value with modern and very thoughtful designs for a traveler. Anyone looking to stay in Merida and have a great walking experience in the old village with the ruins, should consider this hotel as their choice. Parking was next door at a discounted rate, easy....
This hotel was the best overnight stop we have had on this holiday. It was well maintained, clean and comfortable. It offers garage parking which is essential when you are carrying visible luggage. It was also the cheapest 1 night stop.
Lovely people, even lent me an umbrella when I woke up to pouring rain.
A hotel heater that works as intended! a rare and welcome treat with unseasonably cold Spring weather!
Excellent location, easy to walk to museums and archeology.
Staff was incredibly helpful and friendly .The hotel beautiful. It's in a convenient location near most of the historic and archeological sites. Rebeca at the reception desk was an angel. Very highly recommended.
quiet and located easily from main roads down to Cadiz. good value for a 1 night stopover and owner sent clear directions for parking etc Merida has amazing Roman ruins, ended up staying longer than anticipated .
Conveniently located near several Roman ruins. The gentleman at the Reception was very kind, courteous and attentive. He made us feel very welcome from the time we arrived to the time we left the hotel.
Was a cheap overnight stop. Very central location opposite roman ruins, car parking next to hotel. Building needs a little updating but otherwise very good for the price.
People in Merida are usually very nice and friendly, but The receptionists are super helpful and friendly and deserve 100 stars. The hotel has a nice swimming pool.
